Thermometers

Aside from choosing your grill, the most important grilling equipment to consider adding to your set-up are a few tools to help you gauge temperature.

Thermometers are an imperative tool for food safety, and preserving the flavor and texture of the meat. Thermometers allow you to know when your food reaches the minimum internal temperature for safe consumption, without cutting into it. Cutting into meat can alter texture and flavor.

Many grills come with a thermometer gauge already built right into their lids, but if yours does not, you need to purchase a grill thermometer gauge separately to measure the internal temperature of your grill. Because it’s at the top of the lid rather than adjacent to the cooking surface, the reading is not always the most accurate cooking temp. For a more precise estimate of the temperature invest in a fast, reliable instant-read thermometer that will allow you to close the grill lid faster and minimize heat loss.  

 

Grill Scraper and Brush

One of the most simple yet imperative grill tools. Every time you start & finish grilling, you need to use a grill brush to scrape & clean debris from the grates. Keeping your grill grates clean is necessary for you and grill. Not only will it prolong the life of your grill, but it also prevents food from sticking to the grill. Cleaning your grill with a scraper and brush will keep your food tasting fresh while getting those award winning char marks.

Quarter Sheet Pans

Quarter sheet pans may not be the most exciting grilling tool, but necessary nonetheless. They make it easy and convenient to transfer any food from kitchen prep, avoiding any spills, stress or slips. In addition to easy transfer quarter sheet pans also make clean up a breeze. Simply place any cooked meat on one clean tray and the used cooking utensils on the other pan for a one stop clean.

Grilling Baskets

A grill changing tool, grilling baskets are great for vegetables and other smaller more delicate foods. A good grill basket will prevent smaller things from falling through the grates, but will also still allow veggies to get charred from direct heat. Getting a quality heavy duty grill basket is always worth it, as it will last a while and help retain heat.

Grill Spatulas

A good grill spatula is a grill master best friend, allowing you to move food around, without hurting or burning your hands. Cooking larger cuts of meat on the grill can be tricky at the best of times. Doing it with flimsy tools can significantly increase the risk of getting burned, spattered with hot grease, or dropping the food you’re trying to move. Grill Gloves

When it comes to grilling, it’s essential to follow safe practices. Hot grill grates, charcoals, and an open flame can be extremely dangerous if you’re not wearing proper protection. Grill gloves are a great way to protect yourself, even if you use tongs with long handles and use other safe grilling practices. Grill gloves are not the same as oven mitts, as they can protect your skin at much higher temperatures and allow you to reach farther over the surface of your grill.

Metal Skewers and Aluminum Foil

Putting food on a stick may just be the best invention since sliced bread. Skewers are also a great way to add diversity to your everyday meals! While bamboo skewers will certainly do the trick, stainless steel skewers have an added advantage because no soaking is necessary, they are heavy-duty & they have a flat profile – keeping your kebab goodies from rotating on the skewer every time you rotate them. Cutting food into pieces to spear on a skewer ensures that it will cook faster. One famous dish that requires skewers is kabobs, a super easy, fun, and simple way to grill meat and vegetables together. Use your silicone basting brush to marinate and lather the kabobs in your sauce of choice!

Aluminum foil is a cooks best friend! Aluminum foil has countless useless in and outside of the kitchen, but did you know it's a must have for the grill? It is great for wrapping marinated meat and vegetables in it and letting it cook through the foil. The foil creates a "hut" for the flavors, spices, and other aromatics during the grilling process, creating a much more flavorful and tender piece of food. 

 

Silicone Basting Brushes

Though a seemingly small addition to your cooking utensils, the best basting brushes or pastry brushes can make a big difference when grilling. For basting big pieces of meat, fish, or vegetables that could dry out or for applying thicker sauces, silicone is durable, long lasting, and dishwasher safe. Silicone basting brushes are imperative for applying that last minute sauce drizzle while the foods is still on the grill.

With a charcoal chimney, you can successfully light charcoal in pretty much any conditions. It's a huge advantage when you're trying to grill in inclement weather. A good charcoal chimney will save you time, effort, and money down the road. Think of it as a grilling investment! 

 

Cast-Iron Skillet

For the best grilled steaks or burgers, a cast-iron skillet is a necessity. You can get a phenomenal sear on your meat by placing a cast-iron skillet directly on the grill. Instead of grill marks, you get an evenly browned crust and 10 times more flavor. When grilling meat over a grate, the fat drips down into the grill and causes flare-ups, which can make your food taste bitter. However if you cook in cast-iron on the grill, all of the juices stay in the skillet. The meat bastes in its own fat while also taking on the aroma of the smoke.
